Colonisation of new planets - What would it take?
It's time for another of my rants on the "let's return to sanity" theme. This time it's about that old pipe dream about colonising and/or terraforming other planets. Many tech bros and broligarchs try to sell us this idea, as if it was just a matter of willpower alone while laws of physics is merely opinions. And again I feel that the culprit is science fiction, with all the pseudo science invented for different franchises to make them more believable.
I've been a science fiction fan since I was child. I might even qualify as a science fiction buff, but let's not go into that. I like science fiction and am also very interested in astronomy and astrophysics. I love games like Elite: Dangerous (and older space game franchises like Wing Commander), where you travel light years with about as little effort as driving down to the corner shop in real life.However, it's very important to keep science fiction separated from science. Journeys to outer space is a matter of science. Journeys to the moon or Mars are about science, as well as building permanent bases. Permanent bases will be very hard to build, but it is possible. Probably not feasible, but a space race between superpowers is never about feasibility, it's just about flex. To do what others can't.
Colonising and terraforming other celestial bodies along with interstellar travel is where we swerve over into science fiction, and where the answer to the question "what would it take" will be "magic". (Another way of saying "we can't do it".)
Still, this is what the tech bros tries to sell us. Their visions for the future is essentially ideas recycled from science fiction, where planets can be terraformed and colonised.
"Bu-bu-bu-but it might not be possible with the technology of TODAY" may say when faced with the boring prospect of reality. No, it isn't. Nor is it likely that it will be possible with the technology of the future either, because it all comes down to moving certain amounts of mass certain distances, which will require certain amounts of energy. Where time might be a factor.
And here we actually have a lot of knowledge and experience to tap into, since we already are a space-faring species in the meaning that we've proven to be capable of not only leaving our own celestial body, but also set foot on another one. We have built more or less permanent space stations.
All of these examples have one thing in common - It is insanely expensive and took a lot of effort from tens of thousands of people. Just to send one man into space for a short time.
Given this, just think about what it would take to send a lot of people not only into space, but all the way to the moon, along with equipment and materials to build a permanent base.
This is something that all involved are well aware of. Even the visionaries. So this is why they start using flawed logic and circular reasoning to avoid going into detail of the "how". We're going to save fuel by building the larger spaceships in orbit is one argument. But they don't explain what those will be built with. We still need to send components and building material into orbit. Or they will be built on the moon, where we might be able to harvest building materials. But they leave out the part about spaceships requiring advanced parts that needs to be manufactured at equally advanced factories and laboratories. That is, not on a permanent "base" on the moon, but on Earth and then shipped over to the moon.
All this because they, believe it or not, probably know that this will never be a reality.
Space X will never be anything more than a private manufacturer of rockets and rocket engines. They will never take the step into interstellar travel, because that is and will always be science fiction, no matter how much we would like to will star ships with warp drives into existence. The laws of physics says no.
But why? Why are they trying to mislead us?
It's simple. They are hard at work destroying the only habitable planet that mankind will ever inhabit, and need to make false promises of a future elsewhere for us. Even though they know it isn't possible and that we will eventually "provoke" the planet into wiping us all out with natural disasters and temperatures we can't survive. It has already started this cleansing process.
The planet will of course survive, along with many species that are better at adapting to new living conditions, and over a few thousand years it will return to normal. When we're gone, that is.
And once we're gone from Earth, we've gone extinct because we won't have other colonised worlds around the galaxy to survive on as a species. Our future is here, on Earth. So maybe we should stop listening to the people who would have us believe that futuristic fairy tales are predictions of our future, and instead building ourselves a sustainable future where we don't make our planet kill us off?
